I've been?(is it still going) reading HotD since the beginning, like chapter 1. I remember reading it on dial-up, not that it was the choice of the time, just I lived in a small town and that is all we had. I loved reading it, Zombies are my favorite thing and here it was. If you've read it you know what I'll soon be talking about. I read passionately, cult-membery up until that two year hiatus. They had only done, like, seventeen chapters and then we where left hanging. Then it came back, had a few chapters and poof! gone again. During the first hiatus I would check xamayon everyday, because they were the ones doing the translating, hoping for some news. The anime then came out and I was like, "Fuck yeah! Now they have to do more chapters!" We all know how that turned out. I haven't watched all the anime yet, the original Japanese was good, but the English dub is horrible.

The story follows a group of teenagers (and a high school nurse). First they must escape/survive from their high school  then they try to find their parents, and then more trying to survive. There are little side missions, plots and even a fricken villain, buts diving into the spoiler part. In all honesty, I don't know the character's names. They barely used that gayass story tool of having every character say the other's when starting a conversation. It makes for better dialogue. Instead of, "Sokka, hey what's up?" of "Sokka my dear younger brother, hey what's up?" it's "Hey what's up?" You really have to pay attention to get their names (paying attention is something I don't do have.). There is relationship drama, a love triangle once upon a time, genuinly sad moment, and scary moments.

The artist does hentai work (I hear) and it is reflected in the art (It has that hentai art vibe). The girls are sexy, with big boobs and curvy bodies; while the guys are typical shonen dudes. The art is also farely realistic and detailed. Gore, skimpy outfites, zombies, a fat otaku, the manga has it all. One more thing to add, there is no nudity, it uses the Naruto cloud effect to hide nipples.

When I first read it I thought it was the greatest thing ever, it was afterall the only Zombie manga at the time that had real zombies. I still think it's great.

The only thing that I have against the manga is what I said above (hiatus). It is one of the few manga that is still entertaining when you reread it.
